For many years, Aeroflex has been providing a handheld radio frequency tester and decoder, housed in an aluminum enclosure, to the United States military. To remain competitive in the marketplace, Aeroflex was challenged to reduce the overall weight of the device, as well as the costs associated with manufacturing its electronics and aluminum enclosure.
Aeroflex performed in-depth source surveys of several aluminum die-cast facilities before selecting a vendor to manufacture their enclosure parts.
Then fate stepped in. We were all set to place an order for the parts required to create an aluminum enclosure when one of our vendors suggested we consider using magnesium, and Phillips, for the job, says Al Clement, Mechanical Engineering Manager, Aeroflex.
